The Honest Truth about Axis Longboard Pedals...
With the price tags this thing comes with and how absouletely stunning they appear, you'd hope they'd stand the test of time, huh? Steer clear heavy hitters and look elsewear, the right pedals for you are in the other castle!

    there are so many modern pedals out there, that could have been produced by rocket companies (Trick, Altone, ACD, Czarcie Kopyto). Just Take a look at the Altone Pedals - incredible! just wow! Just watch how the beater is swinging - it´s stunning!!! Everytime I see such pedals of course I´m jealous and want one too. But i´m still playing my Gibraltar Intruder and my Tama Camco Pedal from the mid/end 80´s. Simple, reliable, light and fast , easy to repair/restore and maintain - these will outlive me easily. It all depends on your technique and playing ability. As long as you are a "casual" player who does not steadily kick beyond 200 bpm, every decent "normal" pedal that works properly will do the job. If it´s not in your feet, you won´t get it out of the machine.

    Bro…you’re so spot on with this vid! I bought these pedals 2nd hand from EBay years ago…and they were so bad then, that I did a return and included the pics of all the broken parts…and the seller didn’t dispute it and let me keep the pedals for FREE!! The only Con to that…is that I still have them and struggling! What is your opinion of DW 9000 vs Iron Cobras? I’m wanting to get into more double bass work, but I’m 45 years old…and don’t have the strongest shins

      they are both insanely good, the only problem with the DW 9000 is that, your foot might slide all the way through and the tip of your feet/shoes might touch the Drive(chain,direct,etc)

    I have axis a21 sabre Derek Roddy since years and none of the above problems occurred for me except low quality springs i have to change them often.but that's normaI I think cause my settings are super hard.I gig ,I play death metal and what i see in this video most of issues here are coming from simple neglect and poor maintenance.yes these pedals need once a time inspection and maintenance -checking all nuts bolts screws etc they like to losen up sometimes .This stuff working hard in extreme music !it never happen to me to beaters problems with shaving rods -puzzles me what you been doing to them they shave like that seriously.Second thought a bit controversial would be that many people blame pedals -they cant set them up etc and never look at their bad technique that can manifest very quickly and make you struggle with super precise pedals like axis .There's plethora of axis using extreme musicians and while they get nothing for being in their roster or some not even on it they still use axis and not complaint it at all...

    I’ve always stuck with my IC 900’s that I’ve had for 25 years now. I just recently cleaned them for the first time only to make them completely silent while I’m on my DW practice pad kit. I’m so glad I never sold them I’ve never once had an issue with them and they’ve been gigged, toured and practiced with all this time as my only pedals. Just more recently have I purchased a second pedal.. an old DW 5000 USA single chain… its very nice. I’m kinda shocked there are some pedals out their that are straight trash

    I had a set of AL-2's from prolly 2009 and I had the same problem. Back then they were like $700, now $1000!?? Hell No. This video just reconfirmed that I should definitely buy somewhere else lol. The angled beaters were definitely hell sometimes, I loved them so much but the locking system would never holds. I will say axis is my favorite pedal i've played, but man I am looking for new pedals now and I refuse to spend $1000 on them when there's a lot of new direct drive pedals coming out that look way more modern.

    I'm just seeing this now! Yeah, I bought 2 single longboard A's around 2007-ish? and right out of the boxes, I thought it was going to be the greatest day ever Nope! I put the pedals on my 2 Tama 24" kicks'. Adjusted everything accordingly, but I wanted to use my Danmar Redhead long throw beaters instead of the hot mess speed hammer beaters, or whatever they called them back then. so i get the regular wood beaters on and Wow! I was flipping!! I couldn't get the beater to contact the head! It literally Deadheaded at the 12:00 position. So, I went back, readjusted Everything again. NO GO!!!, No matter what I tried I couldn't get a regular beater of any type to impact the head without laying all my weight into it. I looked closer into the issue and found they were using springs which were about 1/3rd too short. replaced the springs with the same gauge coil wire, but longer, the springs needed more coils on them to allow for the full rotation...replaced the springs and now I'm flying....Thanks Axis!

    That's almost opposite of my experience overall, though there's a few similarities. I've had both a double shortboard since ~94 (well, there were no longboards then...) and a single longboard. Service: I've only had to send in one for service once (shortly after I got it), and I got back the pedals not only fixed but with spare parts and a hand-written letter explaining the issue and how it was resolved (early days!). Speed and feel: totally agree. Some love chain drive, but for me, it's like going back in time when I have to play chain drive (DW, Tama, whatever) again. They're fine pedals, but not the same. One might argue that you have more control with something not as "fast," but I don't know. JR Robinson plays Axis, so it's obviously not only about speed. Power: I hear many say this, but I disagree. The speed folks may not configure their Axis pedals this way, but you can hit the kick as loud as you need to with the appropriate beaters and settings. I think there are two things to consider: 1) the same weight beater feels much lighter on Axis--try a heavier beater, and you will get as much power as you want (note how DW has the removable weights with their beaters for their direct-drive pedals); and 2) at some point it really doesn't matter--to double the volume, you need 10x the power, which just isn't going to happen. Yes, the feel is different with chain drive, and that heavier action may "feel" more powerful. That doesn't necessarily mean it's functionally louder. Rod slipping: that hasn't been my experience, but I think it must be a common enough issue that they've apparently redesigned it to be a square design. VDL screw breaking: I've had that happen, but replaced it with a traditional drum key-style metal set screw. I think only the older models had the plastic (resin?) screw? Beaters: yeah, I swapped those out pretty quickly. The "wrecking ball" beater is aptly-named: it chews through drumheads, but pairs well with a Gibraltar Click Pad (if you want that sound). I haven't tried any of the others, though the Kollias beater looks worth a shot. I've had awful luck with beaters, though. I forget which model I used where the head could be rotated up/down to align with the head and then set with a set screw. It invariably would keep rotating while playing until it had rotated up 90 degrees, with the edge of the beater head digging into the batter pad. The one I have now rotates right/left, but for whatever reason, that continually rotates off-center also. One would think it would twist to align itself flat rather than rotating from aligned to off-angle. No problems with an old-school felt Danmar beater, though. I agree 100% on the hoop clamp screw--those get eaten up. The problem is that it's aluminum, which is a soft metal (you can cut it using saw blades made for wood). The mechanism in general is a pain, and my biggest complaint about these pedals. I wish they used something more like DW and others where the screw isn't beneath the footboard--it's difficult to get your fingers in there and tighten it hard enough to the clamp. Thankfully, their velcro is so strong that the pedal is going nowhere (on carpet)... but the clamp mechanism unfortunately won't clamp hard enough to keep the drum in place.

    • @x8jason8x
      @x8jason8x Рік тому

      I've had experience with enough of the Axis line to know that they simply don't deliver the power I want, in any configuration, where others do. Whether every pedal Axis made has the same issue or not, I couldn't say of course... but I've played every type of pedal for sure. Direct drives are unforgiving of mistakes, in build or play. Axis pedals make plenty of them. I will not be buying any Axis pedals that currently exist, and my reason is that while it may be possible to get a good power setup with them, I never managed to find one, even with hours of tuning them. I didn't have to do any setup on my Tricks at all, and they played like sledgehammers out of the box. I can crank the spring all the way up or down, and it doesn't take the finesse out of the footboard, something Axis has never been able to accomplish, in my experience. I've not had the pleasure of being able to really mess with Czarcie Kopyto or ACD pedals, but I've got to play a set of both, and the experience was similar to my Trick Bigfoots, they just play themselves honestly. Ntm that having now played a set for two years, I don't think Axis is capable of making a pedal as good as these.

      @@CrazyPeople131 Yeah, I think the supply issues with Trick Percussion worsened in late February. I saw them pop up occasionally on other websites, but I always prefer to order my most expensive gear from Sweetwater. I received my pedals, but it’s worth noting that I placed my order around the end of January, I think. Worth the wait. The feel takes some getting used to. Playing fast with power is no sweat. I am running into issues getting the same powerful strokes at medium tempos with the slave pedal in the double-pedal configuration. However, I’m almost certain that issue will be fixed when I get my bass drum plate to help me space the beaters evenly from the center of the head. As two single pedals, I have no issues with loss of power at any tempo. I’m still experimenting with different settings (footboard height, beater angle, spring tension). I just wish I didn’t have to buy the case separately.

I've had great service from Axis. Any time your tour equipment it's going to need regular service. I do agree the sonic hamers are not a great design... the 21A Laser solved that problem. My son spent a lot of money on two Axis As with the MicroTorque system. It took almost two months to get them and when they arrived, one of the nuts for the bass drum hoop clamp was already cross-threaded. Off to the hardware store to find a similar machine screw and wing nut. Then, two weeks in, one of the springs broke. This time, we called Axis about 10 times to explain the problem and get some replacements to both fix the pedal and keep some spares. They’re very fast, but everything you said was right about quality control and customer service.

    1000% truth ,,,i had axis before ,,same problems ,,specially the drive shaft ,,the ends start to become rounded so you have to tight a lot the screw but even like that with the movement start to feel lose ,,,this is for speeeed not for punch or grooves ,,i have a speed cobra now ,,,fast and punchy ,,i really recommend those ,,only $300 ,,yess ,,but i play death metal and i really think i lost some speed ,,so im going back to axis ,,just bought it yesterday ,,i love speeed ,,so im happy to go back ,,i know that you have to take more care but m,,,this is the right tool for spped with triiggers,,,tip ,,buy the trick drive shaft ,,if you want to improve this pedals.,,,good video

    If I was "given" an Axis Pedal I'd trade it for something else, a dw, Iron Cobra, Pearl Elim., even a Mapex or pdp concept, just not an Axis, anything but an Axis, them Boushy boutique pedals stink & I wouldn't even waste my time with one

    uh, w those hammer beaters m bd 'bounces' w 2 toms on it and while using 1 pedal. just ur claiming u broke beaters w them contradicts the claim no power can be had w these pedals. u can get better henges for them. maybe there was a plastic wing on the adjuster but isn"t it an allen under the wing? old axis i have are. i think i had plastic wings on mine too.
